  45.      ■WHAT IS DARN!?
  46.      
  47.      DARN! is a simple program with a simple task:  to remind you of 
  48.      events that occur on the same day each year.  Tax payments, 
  49.      dividends, mortgage payments, even birthdays and anniversaries 
  50.      are entered onto a master list (which can hold up to 300 such events).
  51.      A reminder appears on your screen a number (you set) of days before
  52.      an event.  The reminder is repeated through the day of the event.
  53.  
  54.      DARN! is not a TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) program.  Thus it
  55.      takes absolutely no memory from your other applications.

  57.      DARN! was written by Dan Veaner.  I can be reached to answer

  60.      ■SHAREWARE

  62.      DARN! is Shareware.  Shareware distribution gives users a chance to 
  63.      try software before buying it. If you try a DARN! and continue using 
  64.      it, you are expected to register.  This allows you to try the
  65.      program before you buy it.  When you register your copy of DARN!
  66.      you will recieve the latest version of DARN! .  You will also be 
  67.      assigned a serial number which entitles you to technical support.

  69.      Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
  70.      and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
  71.      exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
  72.      programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
  73.      of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
  74.      and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
  75.      distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
  76.      and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a

  147.            2.    EmmaSoft does warrant that the magnetic media on
  148.                  which the software is furnished is free of defects
  149.                  of materials and workmanship under normal use for
  150.                  60 days, provided that EmmaSoft provided your copy
  151.                  of the program on such media.  If during this period
  152.                  the diskette should become defective it may be returned
  153.                  to EmmaSoft for replacement without charge.

  155.      TECHNICAL SUPPORT:

  157.      Only registered users may get technical support.  When you register
  158.      you are assigned a serial number (this will be on your disk label)
  159.      which you must provide when asking for tech support.  EmmaSoft is
  160.      open M-F 9-Noon, 1-5 and sometimes on Saturdays.  The number is

  165.      ■SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  166.  
  167.      DARN! works on IBM PCs, XTs, ATs, 80386 and most compatible
  168.      machines with 80 x 25 character displays including monochrome,
  169.      Hercules, CGA, EGA and VGA.

  171.      ■INSTALLATION
  172.  
  173.      DARN! can be used on hard or floppy disk systems.  As with most
  174.      programs it works more elegantly on a hard disk.  The best way to
  175.      use DARN! is to load it before the first utility called in your
  176.      "autoexec.bat" file.
  177.  
  178.      DARN! comes with an automatic installation program.  Type
  179.      "install<Enter>" to start the program.
  180.  
  181.      What the Installation program does:
  182.  
  183.         1.  It installs DARN! from any disk to any disk
  184.         2.  It allows you to read the "readme" file 
  185.         3.  It makes life easy.
  186.  
  187.      What it doesn't do:
  188.  
  189.         1.  It doesn't change any files including autoexec. bat and
  190.             config.sys.  I hate it when installation programs noodle
  191.             with my files, so this one won't noodle with yours.
  192.  
  193.      To manually install just copy the program and all its files to the
  194.      directory you plan to use, and add the loading commands to your
  195.      autoexec.bat file.
  196.  
  197.      ■GETTING DARN! TO LOAD
  198.  
  199.      Starting with Version 3.0 you can call DARN! from any disk and/or
  200.      directory provided you set the "ANCAL" DOS environment variable.
  201.      We strongly suggest you write this and the DARN! command into your 
  202.      autoexec.bat file.  It should go something like this:
  203.  
  204.                  SET ANCAL=C:\DARN     tells DARN where its files are
  205.                  ANCAL                 calls the program              
  206.                  1STPROG               1st program you use after booting
  207.  
  208.      (Replace "C:\DARN" with the drive/directory YOU are keeping the
  209.      DARN! files in.)
  210.  
  211.      Place the commands as shown just before the first utility you
  212.      normally load.  
  213.  
  214.      If you only want DARN! to come up the first time you turn on or
  215.      boot your computer each day you may do this.  In your autoexec.bat
  216.      file use the following command:

  224.      Most days you will only need one key for this program:  the exit
  225.      key (<F10>).  DARN! will appear on your screen with the events for
  226.      the day.  Once you have viewed them press <F10> to exit the
  227.      program.  (You may also use the <Esc> and <q> keys to exit.)  Use
  228.      <Ctrl><Break> to Quick Quit.
  229.      
  230.      In the Main Screen use the following keys:

  262.      When searching type in all or part of the name or event you are
  263.      searching for and press:

  280.      <F2> Add Entries
  281.      
  282.      DARN! will prompt you to add entries.  There are three parts: date,
  283.      name, and event.  If the event is a birthday or anniversary DARN!
  284.      senses this and also prompts for a number (age).  There are some
  285.      conventions you must follow here:
  286.            
  287.                  Date:  You must use the mm/dd format. 
  288.                  You may enter the date in many ways as long 
  289.                  as there is a slash(/), dash(-), or space( ) 
  290.                  between the month and day.  Examples:
  291.      
  292.                            05/08
  293.                            5-8
  294.                            05 8
  295.                            5/08
  296.      
  297.                  Name:  Names may be up to 25 characters long, 
  298.                  but no longer.
  299.      
  300.                  Event:  Events may be up to 15 characters 
  301.                  long, but no longer.
  302.         
  303.                  Age:  Type the age of the person (or the number 
  304.                  of the anniversary) this year, even if the event 
  305.                  has passed. For example Bob is 45 in May and Betty
  306.                  is 45 in December.  This is July.  Type "45" in 
  307.                  both cases.  If you don't include an age here it 
  308.                  won't show on the main or view screens.  However, 
  309.                  you can add an age later using the Edit (<F2>)
  310.                  facility in the View (<F1>) section.
  311.      
  312.      You don't have to enter a name or event, but you do have to enter
  313.      a date.  You can enter anything under name or event.  For example
  314.      a name entry could be "Quarterly Income Tax" with the event entry
  315.      "first quarter."  Or name could be "Mother's" with event being
  316.      "birthday."
  317.      
  318.      <F3> Quick Sort and Save
  319.      
  320.      When DARN! saves a list it sorts all entries by date.  Pressing
  321.      this key sorts and saves the list to the same file name.  (If your
  322.      list is "sample.drn" it will be overwritten.  If you are simply
  323.      updating a list this is a quick way to save it.  WARNING:  Don't
  324.      press this key if you want to keep the old version of the list.  In
  325.      that case use <F6>.

  327.      <F4> New Events List
  328.      
  329.      If you want to start a new events list from scratch use this
  330.      option.  Make sure you save <F6> it before exiting the program.  
  331.      Be careful not to use <F3> to save unless you want to write over
  332.      the old list.

  335.      <F5> Load a List
  336.      
  337.      Use this option to load a different events list.  (You will
  338.      usually use only one list and so won't need this often.) Type the
  339.      name of the list WITHOUT the extention (.drn).  Thus if you are
  340.      loading the sample.drn list type "sample".
  341.      
  342.      <F6> Save
  343.      
  344.      This option is used to save your changes or new list.  You may use
  345.      the same name, in which case the old list will be overwritten, or
  346.      you may choose a new name, thus keeping a backup copy with the old
  347.      name. The last name saved (or loaded) will load automatically the
  348.      next time you start the program.

  350.      <F7> Program Information
  351.      
  352.      This tells you a little about the program.
  353.      
  354.      <F8> Export List to Ascii File
  355.      
  356.      As of Version 3.0 DARN! can export its Events Lists in ascii format,
  357.      using two varieties of field delimiters.  You may choose to delimit
  358.      fields by quotes or back-slashes.  When you choose quotes the file 
  359.      will look like this:
